What is liposuction?
Liposuction abroad is a surgery which removes fat deposits from under the skin. It can be carried out on every body part, the most common of which are: thighs, knees, hips, buttocks, ankles, arms and calves. Liposuction may be the only method of fat removal when diets and exercises are powerless. The liposuction procedure abroad is very often combined with other procedures in which the excess fat can be processed and utilized, like fat grafting.
What does the procedure of liposuction abroad look like?
The procedure has a few important stages. The surgeon will start the procedure with marking those places on your body from which the fat will be vacuumed. Than the general anaesthesia is performed (sometimes other types of sedation may be used). To make the procedure safer and avoid blood loss, the wetting solutions are used, which contain saline, epinephrine and anaesthetic. The wetting solutions differ in terms of the amount of the fluid. The next step is to remove the fat, which can be done in several different ways:
- Traditional suction-assisted Liposuction – a small incision will be made to insert a cannula, which is a long tube used to suck the fat.
- Ultrasound-assisted Liposuction – once the cannula is inserted through an incision, it produces sound waves which break the fat to enable the surgeon to remove it.
- Power-assisted Liposuction – the fat is broken up with the use of a power-driven cannula and
then the tissue is removed.
- Laser-assisted Liposuction – a burst of power created by a laser fibre probe which gets inserted in the body to turn fat into liquid.
- Body-jet Liposuction – a water-pulsating jet is used to separate fat from the connective tissue. It is then removed, but the fat cells are not damaged nor broken, therefore this type of Liposuction is less traumatic.
Am I a good candidate for liposuction?
Whether you are a good candidate for liposuction will be decided by the surgeon during the consultation. It is crucial to have realistic goals and relatively normal weight. Liposuction does not eliminate loose skin, so it is also important to have elastic skin. Apart from the fact that older people?s skin may not be elastic enough for liposuction, age does not pose an obstacle.
How should I prepare myself for the procedure?
You should definitely quit smoking at least 30 days before the procedure. The doctor will provide instruction concerning the diet. You should probably stop taking certain medicines but not until you consult the doctor. Your doctor may also order certain medical tests, for example blood tests.
What are the risks involved?
Just like any other surgical procedure, liposuction involves some risks:
- imbalance of fluids
- blood clotting

The treatment may last from 1to 4 hours depending on the amount of fat being removed and the treated body part.
You should stay abroad for at least 5 days, and in the clinic – for 2 days after the procedure.
Recovery may last from 4 to 8 weeks. After the procedure you may feel pain and discomfort, and the doctor will prescribe medication to ease the pain. You will advised to temporarily wear a compression garment to let your body rest and adjust to the new body shape. You may also experience numbness and swelling, which should disappear within a week. Ask your doctor about the details, what kind of activity you may perform, and when you can return to your normal routine.
