    Treatment description

    What is Strabismus surgery?

Strabismus operations consist of weakening or strengthening of the relevant extraocular muscles i.e. muscles moving the eyeball. The corresponding effect is achieved by shortening the muscle (the gain) or cutting it and sewing further back than the original attachment (muscle weakness). All strabismus operations are performed using traditional methods and are not performed with a laser.

    Preparing for strabismus surgery

Strabismus operations are carried out under general anesthesia (full anesthesia). It is usually performed on an outpatient basis, i.e. you come on an empty stomach, surgery is performed, and after a few hours the patient goes home. Decisions about discharging the patient are made by anesthesiologist based on your individual clinical status.

It is very important to not eat or drink for at least 6 hours before the surgery. If treatment is provided in the morning do not eat or drink after midnight. If the surgery is scheduled in the afternoon you can enjoy a light breakfast, but no later than 8 am.

7-14 days prior to surgery, it is necessary to perform the following additional tests:

    • CBC with a differential

    • sugar on an empty stomach

    • test for the presence of HBsAg

    • HCV testing

    • examination of coagulation: INR, APTT

    • examination of the level of sodium and potassium in the blood

    • ECG for people over 40 years of age

    • Chest X-ray examination for people over 60 years of age

In addition, prior to surgery you should be vaccinated against hepatitis type B. Four weeks after the first vaccination you are given a second dose. Safe levels of antibodies are obtained two weeks after the second dose. The third vaccination is taken after 6-12 months and protects against infection for about 5-8 years. The effectiveness of vaccination can be checked by examining the level of antibodies in the blood.

In some cases the anesthesiologist may recommend other tests or additional specialist consultations.

During the operation, the patient must be healthy, with no signs of upper respiratory tract infections such as colds, coughs, etc.
