    Treatment description

    What is Mastectomy surgery?

Mastectomy is surgery to remove the entire breast, usually meaning the nipple and areola. Mastectomy is usually carried out in the treatment of breast cancer. The indications for mastectomy is for breast cancer to occur in more than one quadrant of the breast.

Preparing for mastectomy and course of the treatment

A few days before the operation studies are carried out to evaluate the overall health of women. Tell your doctor and anesthesiologist about the medicines you are taking and allergies to certain medications. Before the surgery you should refrain from taking certain herbal supplements, such as ginkgo, because they can increase the risk of bleeding.

What does mastectomy surgery look like?

The patient has drugs administered intravenously that may be necessary during the operation. Heart functions are monitored by ECG device. The woman’s blood pressure is monitored during surgery. The patient is given general anesthesia, and in some cases a dose of antibiotic to prevent infection.

The surgeon makes an incision and removes the breast tissue. Breast tissue is then sent to a laboratory for examination under a microscope, to check if the changes are benign or malignant. The surgeon then sews the skin. After surgery sometimes a pressure dressing is assumed.

    Complications after surgery

If after surgery you have the following symptoms, call your doctor:

    • fever,
    • signs of infection (strong red tint at the incision site)
    • increased fluid secretion,
    • dehiscence of sutures.

Most women recover from surgery without complications, but as with any surgery there is a risk of infection, bleeding, problems associated with general anesthesia, and response to drugs. Numbness and breast skin necrosis can also occur. Numbness does not require treatment, but the necrosis may require re-operation. In the case of mastectomy, when lymph nodes are removed, there may be swelling of the arm and nerve damage in the armpits.

If breast cancer is detected at an early stage in the form, mastectomy treatment is effective in over 90% of women. Additional treatments such as hormone therapy, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy, increase the chances to avoid recurrence of the disease, and long life.
