    Glaucoma Surgery Abroad

    Treatment description

    What is glaucoma?

It is a chronic disease characterized by progressive damage of the optic nerve leading to damage to the eye, until the loss of vision.

    When does glaucoma appear?

Glaucoma is the leading cause of blindness in the world. In Poland, it affects about 700 thousand people. Chronic glaucoma neuropathy excludes large numbers of people from professional and social life.

The most common form of glaucoma is primary open-angle glaucoma, which occurs in approximately 75% of patients with primary glaucoma. It is also the most dangerous. It develops slowly and often in the early stages has no symptoms. The first change in the field of vision is noticed by the patient only when a certain region of the retina causes damage to approximately 50% of nerve fibers. The resulting changes are irreversible and are progressing.

Another form of glaucoma is glaucoma of angle closure. In these patients, when it comes to a sudden angle closure, with significantly elevated pressure in the eye, there is an acute attack of glaucoma. There are symptoms such as rainbow circles around lights sources, a significant deterioration of visual acuity, severe eye pain and headache, nausea, and vomiting. This situation requires urgent attention.

    Risk factors for glaucoma:

    • Although it is not clear what causes glaucoma, are known risk factors. These are:
    • Age above 35 years of age,
    • Cases of glaucoma in the family,
    • Myopia greater than 4 diopters
    • Diseases of the retina,
    • Low blood pressure,
    • Elevated cholesterol and glucose,
    • The tendency to migraines.

    How to treat glaucoma?

Most of the patients in the initial stage can be treated with eye drops. However, in cases where despite the use of drugs, the intraocular pressure is persistently elevated or the visual field defects, invasive methods should be considered. In congenital glaucoma, acute closed-angle glaucoma, the first line of treatment is surgery. In other glaucoma types, especially those occurring in the course of other diseases that are difficult to treat with eye drops, laser or surgical treatment is an early choice.

Performance of the iridotomy Nd: YAG laser is done to prevent a sudden increase in intraocular pressure (acute glaucoma attack).
