    Gastric Banding Abroad

    Treatment description

    What is gastric banding surgery?

The adjustable gastric band has been used in bariatric surgery since 1985. The idea of the procedure itself is an adjustable gastric band, which is a special belt designed to divide the stomach into two parts: an upper volume of about 25ml (the pouch), and a bottom part. The narrow passage between them makes the consumption of even small amounts of food make the pouch filled creating a feeling of satiety and appetite suppression. The band itself has a mechanism for adjusting the degree of tightening around the stomach. Is connected to a drain with a special port placed under the skin, usually below the left costal margin. Through this port the doctor by injecting a saline solution can regulate the degree of band clamping and thus affect the rate of body weight loss. The method is fully reversible, and although the assumption of an adjustable gastric band is to be permanent, it is always possible to remove it and restore the digestive tract to the state before the surgery.

How does the surgery look like?

The procedure performed completely laparoscopically, which significantly reduces perioperative injury, improves patient’s comfort after surgery and enables a faster return to full physical activity.

The implantation of a gastric band requires regular check-ups. The first visit takes place 4-6 weeks after discharge from the hospital, and then every 3 months for the first 2 years, then every six months. Notably, in patients who fail to go to control visits the outcome is much worse. Therefore, this procedure is not recommended when the patient is unable to appear regularly for checks-ups.
